From a humble background to an international sports icon, Tegla singles out humility, patience, hard work, team spirit and mercies from the Almighty as the principle ingredients of such a success story. She is perhaps unrivalled international sports figure of all time with a number of international athletics medals, records and honours in her belt.
Tegla Loroupe, born in 1973 in West Pokot County, is a Three-time World Half-marathon Champion, Winner and Two-Time world record holder in the New York Marathon. In 2006, she was named the UN Athlete for Sports & Peace Ambassador, by the Secretary General, the Late Kofi Annan and many other Ambassadorial roles followed. 2016, she was named by the IOC Executive Board the Chief De Mission for Refugee Olympic Team to participate in the Olympic Games. In 2016, she was honoured as the 2016 UN Person of the Year in Kenya having been proposed by the UN Refugee Agency for using her athletic prowess to promote peace-building in conflict zones and for her leadership in ensuring refugee participation in the 2016 Olympic Games for the first time in history. She is an executive member of many international bodies among them WADA and ANOCA.
Her own experiences make her a heroine and role model for girls and women. She is vociferous about the issues they face and is a strong advocate for change. She has set up the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation.
Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation
TLPF was established in 2003. Registered as charity organization under the PERPETUAL SUCCESSION ACT, CHAPTER 164, LAWS of KENYA the Foundation was initiated by Tegla Loroupe, a 3 time world half-marathon champion, a 2 time world marathon record holder, amongst several other national and international titles.
The Foundation was established in pursuit of achieving Tegla Loroupe’s dream of doing charity. She saw it good to use her track and field achievements, skills and friends to promote peaceful coexistence and socio-economic development of poor and marginalized pastoralists and agro-pastoralists men, women and children in the Greater Horn of Africa Region. The Foundation uses sports as a tool for socio-economic development. Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation (TLPF) is a Peace and Development organization that uses creative programmatic interventions for Peace and development in the Greater Horn of Africa Region.
